Started by John Peake, Headmaster of Bishops in the 1980’s, to foster a cultural spirit among the Houses, this competition has grown dramatically over the years to become the highlight of the school’s cultural calendar.
All aspects of cultural life are put to the test - music, drama, speech, debating , visual arts and photography – and although the main focus is given to the performances on the Eisteddfod days, much preparation has taken place during the term and many preliminary rounds have tested the skills of all the students in the school.
By the time the Eisteddfod arrives the spirit has reached fever pitch as each House strives for the coveted Eisteddfod Owls . The activities culminate in the Inter-House Singing Competition at which the final adjudication takes place and the Owls are awarded.
OWLS AND OVERALL RESULTS
Mr Nupen gave thanks to Mrs Shirley Lamb for 21 years of Service to Bishops and the leadership of Eisteddfod. The Eisteddfod Interhouse Singing moved to His People due to outgrowing the Mallett Centre, thanks to Shirley. Shirley was asked to join Grant Nupen on the stage and was presented with a gift as a token of appreciation.
Shirely Lamb responded by thanking the sections that have made a contribution to the Cultural success at Bishops. She thanked the Bishops Music department led by Mark Mitchell which she described as the backbone of the Eisteddfod. She continued by thanking Wayne Tucker for his inspirational leadership of the Drama Department. The Visual Arts under the leadership of Peter hyslop and Bridget Simons as well as the Photography department under the direction of John Holtman. The Language departments have also have made a huge contribution. She also thanked the IT department, Riette (Eisteddfod director) and Geoff Kilpin (Cultural Prefect) who has 'kept her on her toes'. She finally thanked the boys - as teachers "we command, direct, and ultimately you follow. I am proud of the individuals who have excelled over the last few days. The ones that I am particularly proud of are those who take part in all the house events."
