Dear College Parents

“I pass with relief from the tossing sea of Cause and Theory to the firm ground of Result and Fact.” - Winston Churchill, The Story of the Malakand Field Force.

Over the past few days I have felt a bit like the character in the above quote as we sail the Bishops ship through the storm which rages about us following the Noseweek article. At the same time I am reminded of the following:

“Do not consider it proof just because it is written in books, for a liar who will deceive with his tongue will not hesitate to do the same with his pen.” - Maimonides

I would like to thank all parents for their messages of support following the distribution of the statement issued by the Chairman and me yesterday. As I said to the boys in Chapel yesterday, we have so much to be proud of today and we need to use this opportunity to spread the “good news” about Bishops. At the same time we need to acknowledge that sexual abuse, of boys and girls, is a societal evil which needs to be addressed, and compassion and support should be given to those who have suffered from this in the past. We need to also make sure that we do everything in our power to prevent this from happening again in the future.

The Assembly notices today are an example of the amazing achievements of our boys in such a diverse range of activities.

I would like to bring the following to your attention:

Cricket Golf Day

In October 2013, Bishops Cricket hosted a fantastic golf day to raise funds for improvements to Cricket infrastructure. Due to the generous support of the golfers, sponsors and auction bidders, Bishops Cricket has benefitted from a number of new assets and also improvements (pitch roller/net improvements/scoreboards) and there are more projects already underway.

To sustain this momentum, we are already planning the 2014 Golf Day. This will be held at Steenberg Golf Estate on 20 October 2014. Please save the date. For more information please contact marketing@bishops.org.za

Brush with Bishops

Please see the attached “flyer” which gives details of “A brush with Bishops” which will highlight the visual beauty of the school by renowned OD artist Richie Ryall. The text will be provided by Dr Paul Murray, this promises to be an exceptional publication.

Principal’s Message in Assembly

On Wednesday evening we heard an excellent talk from Mrs Everingham about the importance of relationships. I want to show you a video clip which makes a very strong point about the dangers which social media has on establishing meaningful relationships.

I suggest some simple rules:

Never use your cell phone when you are in a group, restaurant or during a family meal. If you absolutely have to then have the courtesy to leave the room.

Look up as often as possible to take in the beauty of the natural environment you find yourself in, right here at Bishops I suggest you look up every day to the mountain, one of the natural wonders of the world!

I would like to wish you all well in your sporting encounters this weekend against Paarl Gym in Paarl. The hockey 1st XI plays this afternoon and the rugby 1st XV tomorrow. It will be a test I am sure, but I know that you will all be up to the challenge and play with great heart and determination. Good luck!

Have a great weekend.

Yours sincerely

Guy Pearson
