NEWSLETTER: LIBRA ONLINE

Editorial

Mrs Vuyo Gontshi, our new part-time assistant librarian, has settled in quickly and easily and has already become a firm favourite with the boys and the volunteer moms who help us in the library.  She is gradually getting to know the teaching staff and confidently coping with her duties.

The Library is also undergoing a face-lift to its physical appearance, and is looking sparkling clean and fresh thanks to really efficient painters who have worked quickly, protecting the precious stock in the process.   The garden outside has also undergone a transformation with replantings and brick designs replacing the previous neglected, haphazard look, and we are delighted with all these improvements.

The Book Club had its first outing on 8 February, traveling into the CBD and successfully beating off the attempt by the Opening of Parliament to prevent us from getting to our destination – it took Tony Noon many detours up side roads and down by-roads  - and we arrived one and a half hours later, having learnt much about the history, architecture and terrain of Woodstock and District 6.  We had arranged a visit to the Octagon TV studios, part of the Longkloof Studios from which ETV is broadcast.  And what an amazing visit: the creators of URBO: THE ADVENTURES OF PAX AFRICA took us through the whole process of creating a TV animation series – from the inception of the story by the writers, to the story board designers, to the 3d animation of each of the characters, to the sync of the actors’ voices and the animated figures, to the sound studio where we listened to and watched well-known (and very funny) SA actor Nic Pauling, say his lines in different ways to suit the director, and finally to the person who puts it all together using  state-of-the-art technology.  This was valuable and fascinating time spent with a team of dedicated and brilliantly creative individuals, all pulling in the same direction to create a work of art week in and week out.  The boys discovered team work of a whole new kind.

We combined with the Philosophy Society to host an evening with Leonie Joubert, author of "Scorched" and environmental journalist for the Mail and Guardian.  She was provocative and thought-provoking.

We plan to invite Lauren Beukes back to talk about her book "Moxyland" - a futuristic imagining of Cape Town where branding and consumption combine with ruthless politicians to creat a chilling thriller.
