Dear Parents

“We know that God is everywhere; but certainly we feel His presence most when His works are on the grandest scale spread before us; and it is in the unclouded night-sky, where His worlds wheel their silent course, that we read clearest His infinitude, His omnipotence, His omnipresence.” – Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre

In exactly three weeks’ time the academic year at Bishops will be over! The Grade 12 exams are going well and our Grade 11s began their exams this week. The Grades 8 and 9 exams begin on Monday.

For our Grade 10s it has been an exciting week as they prepare for The Epic. Yesterday I accompanied them as they did a training hike up Devil’s Peak, a truly magnificent experience and a reminder of the wonderful natural environment which we enjoy in Cape Town. From an educational and personal growth perspective the Epic is extremely important and a great deal of research has been done on the importance of a wilderness experience. The Cederberg is one of the few remaining true wilderness areas left in this country. We know that a wilderness experience changes people and has restorative power, especially in today’s frantic and over-crowded world.

Dr Ian Player wrote: ‘What we have in these places is the most precious of worldly gifts, a sense of spiritual connection with the land. If we protect the nature of wilderness it could be our greatest gift to the modern world’. We wish all our Grade 10 boys and the staff accompanying them all the best as they embark on this very special adventure.

On 5th December we are trying something different to end the year. We will be holding a combined Final Assembly and Carol Service on the Friday which will replace the Carol Service previously held on the Thursday evening. Please note that the Final Assembly and Carol Service is a compulsory event for all Grade 8-11 boys.

Attached as usual are today’s Assembly notices.
