Dear College Parents

"Year’s end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going on, with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us." Anon

A very warm welcome to all of you at the start of this new year. As always it is a time of great excitement and anticipation. On Wednesday we welcomed 155 new boys to grade 8 and an additional 4 boys to grades 9-11. I particularly welcome the grade 12 boys and their parents to their last year at Bishops; I trust that it will be a memorable one and look forward to the leadership of the school by Head boy Francois Stassen and his matrics.

In addition to the new boys we have a number of new staff and promotions:

Promotions: Warren Wallace (Deputy Head Sport and Discipline); Jean Nolte (HD White House); Willem Steyn (Assistant HD White House); Burgert Maree (Assistant HD Ogilvie).

New teachers: Carrie Bester (English); Jarred Bradley (Afrikaans); Casey Anley (BSU); Aneen Kritzinger (Xhosa).

Temporary replacements: Rob Henning (in place of Donovan Abrey); Dawn Ellingson (Bev Kemball).

Admin changes: Verna Leverzencie (Information Manager); Lael Rothenberg (Secretary to Deputy Heads).

Interns: Chris Ekron; Mubashir Solomon; Jabulile Mazibuko; Casey Morgan.

BSU Interns: Kerry van Zyl and Claire Kingwill.

Stooges: Colin Richmond; Zukile Ncube; Sambulo Msani; Matthew Leppan; Ruan de Wet.

Last week you would have received the news of our tremendous matric results from the class of 2015. At the Awards Ceremony of the WCED on Tuesday, Michael Thomson was placed in the top 20 in the Province - a fantastic achievement. Unfortunately our dux, Liam Cook, was not eligible for the top 20 because the criteria excludes students who do not take two South African languages - as an immigrant Liam did French instead of Afrikaans.

During the holidays we heard the wonderful news that Saadiq Brey and Michael Thomson had been awarded Alan Gray Fellowships. Congratulations indeed!

The Bishops tuck shop has been taken over by our caterers, Origin. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Karen Mallett, who has run the tuck shop for many years with amazing grace and dedication. The tuck shop offering has changed to providing more healthy food in line with international trends and good eating habits. This will include not serving chips, fizzy drinks and the like. Please see the attachment for the menu.

For the information of new parents, my message to the boys in assembly today is included - please follow this link. I do this to allow you to engage with your sons on the issues and themes which are presented at assemblies during the year. We also include assembly notices which highlight the achievements of boys during the year.

I wish you all well for the year. There is no doubt that it is going to be a challenging year for our country and the world in general but I am confident that the “Bishops ship” will sail safely through the choppy waters!

Yours sincerely
Guy Pearson
