Dear College Parents

"Citius, Altius, Fortius"; Faster, Higher, Stronger: Olympic Motto

I am sure that you have all been enthralled by the Olympic Games which are being held in Rio, Brazil. The performance of South Africa’s Wayde van Niekerk in the 400m will be remembered as the greatest athletics performance at these games. The Olympics was the theme of my talk to the boys in Assembly today. (Please see Principal’s Message attached.)

On Tuesday this week Bishops hosted three U18 International Rugby matches between Wales, Italy, England, France, South African Schools A and South African Schools B. It was a perfect day and the Piley Rees fields and surrounds were in immaculate condition. It was a wonderful advert for Bishops and I want to take this opportunity of congratulating our Grounds Manager, Donovan Murray, and his team for the superb work they do.

On Saturday the Simply Blue handover concert takes place in the Mallett Centre. Simply Blue is one of our “flagships”, and I want to congratulate the outgoing matrics for their tremendous contribution over the past 2 years. Over the long weekend they went on tour and sang in Somerset West and Hermanus. The positive impression they made is summed up in extracts from this letter from Michael Matthews of the Overstrand Hospice:

"As you may know Simply Blue performed a concert in Hermanus on Sunday for the benefit of the Overstrand Hospice. It was an occasion that will long be remembered for its spontaneity and joie de vivre and we are most grateful to Bishops for bringing us this special experience.

Some 250 happy people were treated to an enthralling and polished performance which will have brought great credit to the school. The singing was amazing and the discipline professional.

The boys were natural, modest, obviously enjoyed every minute and must have been pleased with the sometimes ecstatic response from the appreciative audience. Bishops can be justly proud of this enthusiastic, committed and very personal group of boys."

Today and tomorrow we look forward to our penultimate Winter sports fixtures against Wynberg in squash, hockey and rugby at Wynberg. Next week we end the season with our traditional derby fixtures against Rondebosch at Bishops. An advance warning that the 1st XV match against Rondebosch will be played at 2pm because the match will be televised live on the Supersport Channel 201.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

Yours sincerely
Guy Pearson
