Dear College Parents

God could not be everywhere and therefore made Mothers - Rudyard Kipling

After a glorious run of wonderful weather it seems as if winter has arrived with a vengeance! As I have mentioned before it is important that the boys focus on their academics as we have had a very disruptive few weeks. I am pleased with the support we received from you all for our decision to work on Election Day, this sends out a strong message to the boys about the importance of getting back into the rhythm of the academic programme. There are 13 school days left before the Matrics write their mid-year examinations.

There are two matters for your attention:

  • Bishops has a mobile app that you may like to use. Type in into your browser on your mobile and bookmark the page. Safari (on an iPhone) will allow you to add Bishops Mobile to your Home Screen. Here you will find quick links to fixtures and results and our photo galleries
  • Pick n Pay Smart Shopper Card is running a competition until 31 May 2014. We encourage parents to swipe their Smart Shopper cards for groceries at any Pick n Pay, then put your till slips in the collection box at Reception in Pre Prep, Prep or College. Your help in collecting 1000 slips will give Bishops R1000 back in Smart Shopper points. The Bishops Donation code is 64000048. Competition terms and conditions may be viewed at

You will see from my message to the boys in Assembly today that we look forward to our fixture against our traditional rivals, SACS, today and tomorrow. While we urge the boys to play their matches in the right spirit, it is very important that our supporters also encourage our teams in a positive manner.

Principal’s Message: Assembly-Friday 9th May

Mother’s Day

On Sunday we celebrate Mother’s Day, a day to honour our Mothers and to acknowledge the very special role they play in our lives. I would like to play a short video which sums up what an incredible job Mothers do. (

This Sunday is an opportunity for you boys to show your appreciation to your Mothers and hopefully in cases where the relationship is damaged to reach out in love to this very special person in your life.

Let us remember that throughout the world women continue to be abused and treated with degradation, we think particularly of the girls in Nigeria who have been kidnapped by the Boko Haram group. Let us use Mother’s Day as an opportunity not only to celebrate our own Mother’s, but to make sure that we treat all the women in our lives with dignity and respect.

Simply Blue

I would like to commend our a cappella group, Simply Blue, on their fantastic performances on their tour of KZN and the Midlands. I have received many messages of congratulation; one of them reads as follows:

I have to tell you that your Bishops boys who sang here were absolutely superb, as you well know, it is not easy to stand on that stage and sing in Assembly, in front of 560 Michaelhouse boys, but they really did you proud. They were confident without arrogance, and gave a really 'cool' performance which they obviously enjoyed. Well done to them, and I hope they enjoyed their time here.

Well done!

SACS Fixture

Today and tomorrow is the first of our much awaited Winter Sports fixtures against one of our Southern Suburbs rivals. I look forward to all hockey and rugby matches being played in a spirit which respects and celebrates the long and proud history between Bishops and SACS. In fact the very first recorded rugby match between schools was between Bishops and SACS in 1862. We wish our 1st XI hockey all the best in their match this afternoon at 15h50 and the 1st XV at 11h40 tomorrow at SACS.

Good luck to you all, have a wonderful weekend.

Yours sincerely

Guy Pearson
