Rhodes Scholarship


Diocesan College has its own designated Rhodes Scholarship which dates back to 1902. The following are eligible to apply:

  • Former students (of at least one year) from Bishops, Leap 1 School, St Cyprians, Herschel and St George’s Grammar School
  • The sons and daughters of members of present and past academic and support staff of designated schools who have served or will have served the school for at least 5 years
  • The sons and daughters of present and past parents of designated schools, who have, or have had, or will have had a son or daughter at the school for at least five years;
  • The sons and daughters of present and past members of Council at designated schools who have served the school for at least five years;
  • The sons and daughters of ODs and former alumni/ae of the designated schools where such son or daughter was educated in South Africa for at least five years.

Applications open in June of each year and the closing date is 15 August. The scholarship is advertised each year through the Rhodes Trust in Johannesburg, the school’s themselves and the OD Website and information evenings are conducted by Bishops and the Trust. The Mary Gray Studentship is for a Grade 12 Student at Bishops and the selection process is conducted with the assistance of the Senior Tutor from St John’s College Cambridge.
